Little Black Sambo began as a children’s story, but the name and imagery grew far beyond the book. Through repeated illustrations, advertising and commercial use, “Sambo” became part of a broader visual vocabulary of anti-Black caricature.

The Sambo Tee returns to the source material rather than separating the image from its history. It examines how repetition can turn an illustration into a stereotype—and how an image can accumulate meanings its original page could never contain.
